Bainbridge Island Special Needs Foundation (BISNF) also known as "Stephens House" was established in 2002. We operate a day program for young adults with developmental disabilities, focusing on quality of life enhancements. For many this program offers the next step after leaving the public school system by providing continued structure and education. Our goals are to increase physical health, mental well-being and social interaction for participants, while providing respite for caregivers. The program also offers training and practice in life skills and appropriate social behaviors.

Activities include field trips, swimming and daily exercises, art projects, computer learning, and small work contracts for local businesses. Two staff work full time, plus numerous local volunteers provide support. We are funded primarily through private and public grants, and individual donations.  We are open 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM Monday through Friday.

September Activity Calendar

Mary is planning an Open House in the next few weeks so that she can meet parents, caregivers and others in the community that support special needs individuals.  She will communicate more about this event soon, because she feels it is an important method for assimilating quickly. The Board would like to thank everyone that has warmly welcomed Mary to the BISNF and let you know your efforts have contributed greatly to her orientation,
This is Linda and the Board is happy to announce that we have found a new Program Director.  Her name is Mary McAvoy and she is very excited about working at the BISNF.  She has a BA in Secondary Education and an Advanced Paralegal Certificate.  She is currently pursuing her Masters in Special Education.  Mary has worked with individuals with special needs as a teacher and has experience in working with a Board.  She has been at Stephens House the past few weeks and has already integrated into our participant experience.
